When you are searching for a job, you want to present yourself in the most professional way possible to potential employers. You should expect that employers will judge you not just on your skills but on the way you present yourself to the world. We suggest you do the following to present yourself in a positive light to employers:
Privacy Settings on Social Media
Maintaining your privacy should be top on your list when you are searching for a job. Here’s how to enhance your privacy on social media.
Your privacy settings control who can view your profile and your posts. Your profile photo and cover photo are visible to the public, so you should make sure these photos reflect the image you want to share with potential employers. To adjust your Facebook privacy settings, click your photo in the top right while using the app, select settings & privacy, then click privacy shortcuts. From here you can take a privacy checkup and make your information private. Click on Who Can See What You Share then Continue. Turn all of these settings to either Only Me or Friends, and make sure Public is not checked for any of these.
You may also wish to make your Instagram a private account while you are searching for a job. To make Instagram private, while using the app, click on the 3 lines in the upper right corner. Select Settings, then Privacy. Under Account Privacy, you can slide the slider to the right to make your account a Private Account.
TikTok
Your TikTok app can also be made private. From the app, in the Profile section, select the three lines at the top right of the screen. Select Settings and privacy. Then select Privacy. From here, you can slide the slider to the right on Private account and make your account private. With a private account only users you approve can follow you and watch your videos.
WhatsApp is another way employers will “meet you” before they meet you. In WhatsApp, you should click on Settings to change your profile settings to be professional while you are searching for a job. Make sure your name and your profile photo project the image you want employers to see. Also make sure your About statement is also professional.
Dress for Success
When you get an interview, you want to dress in a way that makes your employer feel comfortable. Different families have different standards of modesty, so you should opt for conservative dress when you interview. No short shorts or skirts, no tight shirts, no ripped jeans. Instead opt for a nice blouse, pants, skirt or jeans, and modest shoes. Wearing makeup is ok, but wear your makeup in nice, neutral colours. Save your red lipstick, perfume, short shorts and hot pants for days when you are not going on interviews.
